An eventful first full day in Barbados! Heavy overnight rain has seen some flooding on the island but the day has generally been hot and dry - even with some cloud cover the sun has been very strong and one or two have been caught out! A whale was seen in the shallow waters off Dover Beach - no, honestly it was but you can insert your own punchline here! Somehow, Paul Clough managed to lose his sunglasses in the sea but it's not thought the whale was involved!
The lads had their first team meeting - in the sea at 6am!!! After breakfast, they then headed to Dover Beach Sports Ground for a 2 hour training session during which they learnt how tough conditions out here could be! The weather was hot and humid, and the ground bumpy despite the earlier rain. Scooby reckons this is an "average" playing facility for Barbados so we wait to see a poor one with some trepidation. The team are due to play at least one game at Dover Beach but to be honest the wicket looks like a minefield (see below)! The first game is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) at, and against, Deighton Griffith Secondary School - here's hoping the pitch is in decent shape.
After some "down time" the Squad assembled at The Ship Inn to relax, watch the Champions League football and have a bite to eat. A good time was had by all and several of the "Supporters Group" were seen in a new light!
So - lessons from today!
- Always wear sun screen, even if it's not that sunny!
- The cricket will be tough and the players will face real challenges in these conditions.
- There is no Marks & Spencers in Dover Beach, despite what "4 Jugs From Ramsbottom" believed to be evidence to the contrary!
- Rum Punch makes women who should know better sing Songs From The Musicals in a public place.
- We still don't understand Chinese writing.
